Orlando 2017 Convention

NMRA 2017 Orlando

After spending considerable time in the siding, the LDSIG Board of Directors is pleased to announce that we have a Proceed signal. We have a schedule to share with you while we’re picking up orders on the fly. The 2017 National Model Railroad Association Convention - the Orange Blossom Special - will be held in Orlando Florida July 30 - August 6 at the Rosen Plaza Hotel. Please go to nmra2017orlando.org for NMRA’s convention details, registration info, and activities.

The LDSIG will share space with other Special Interest Groups, where we’ll meet, share layout plan displays, renew memberships, network, hold layout design consultations, and the like. The formal schedule includes the Sunday night Meet’n’Greet, our ongoing daily (except Wednesday) layout design consulting, our Wednesday morning Annual Meeting, and the long-anticipated Wednesday layout tour with 15 layouts currently on our list. We’ll post details and updates on the LDSIG.org webpage and the Yahoo group. Tour cost remains at $40 including the famous blue shirt; you’ll be able to sign up at the NMRA Company Store .

Important Note:  The Company Store has closed.  Tickets can now only be purchased at the Convention.  Starting Sunday, go to the Tour Desk to purchase tickets and then bring your Tour tickets to the LDSIG Desk in the SIG Room to exchange their ticket for a shirt.  The shirt will be their 'ticket' to the tour, identifying them as having bought tickets.  This year's shirt will be wicking material rather than 100% cotton.  The engine on the logo will be an FEC E-8.

Please check this LDSIG website for information on the Tour layouts, so they can select which they would like to visit; there will be more layouts availalble than time to see them all.

Carpool sign-ups will start on Sunday, and be finalized at the Annual General Meeting, 8 AM Wednesday, after which the maps with addresses will be distributed.

We’ve encountered a Restrictive signal regarding our usual Friday dinner. VP Bob Reid has done yeoman’s work exploring our options and has the following report:

Orlando in the vicinity of our hotel turns out to be a very expensive area for a group dinner such as ours. After an exhaustive search the only possibilities resulted in ticket prices between $70 and $100 that just barely covered cost and left the LDSIG with substantial exposure to very high minimum guarantees should attendance be below expectations.

After much deliberation the board concluded such prices were too much to expect our members to pay for a buffet dinner.

We are looking for alternatives more suited to our group.  The SIG Dinner has traditionally been an opportunity to close out the week of intensive activities in a more relaxed setting.

One thought might be  to schedule a brief gathering in the SIG room followed by a cocktail , where folks could plan on eating out in groups of old (and new) friends somewhere in the immediate vicinity.

We are encouraging the consideration of other ideas.  Please contact VP Bob Reid (contact info) with your thoughts.

You’re encouraged to contact any BOD member with your questions and suggestions. In the meantime, we look forward to seeing many of you at the Orange Blossom Special!
